As a technology trainer, I spend a lot of time working with teachers to teach them how to use technology in their classroom. One thing that takes some time is becoming familiar with the SmartBoard. The video I am proposing will show teachers how to set one up and serve as a reference video after the one-on-one training is done. Some of the descriptions below are brief, but the video will cover all the aspects of setup in depth with narration (and hopefully some humor).
Setting Up A SmartBoard (for the Technology section of Light Bulbs)
1) Title with upbeat background music (courtesy of PodSafeAudio or GarageBand)
2) Ominous shot of the SmartBoard - Intimidating music - "These can be scary if you don't know how easy it is to get one set up".
3) "Trust me it's easy - And I'm here to walk you through it" - Lighting changes - Not scary anymore.
4) "First things first - Position the SmartBoard in a place that works for you and your class."
Examples of Places that don't work with "Red Circle and Slash" through them.
5) "Here are some places that might suit you and your classroom best..." Examples of where the SmartBoard makes the most sense.
6) "So now that it's in place - What's Next? Well - Let's keep it in place" Showing how to lock wheels and bring down "feet".
7) "Alright - But How Do I Set It Up to Work With My Laptop..." Showing the one USB wire needed - Explaining about the two ends and plugging it in. "Look at the lights on the pen tray - and when this light goes green you know you're in business".
8) Hooking up the projector to the laptop and getting the picture out (close up on Fn+F7)
9) Calibrating the Board - It's that simple...
10) If someone bumps into the board or the laptop cart - it's easy to recalibrate....
11) Credits - Done on a SmartBoard - and Music (Again - GarageBand)

I think that this is a fabulous video. I actually teach a smartboard course at my tract center and this would be very useful. I love how you break each section down and will have this available to teachers. Will it be up on your server? I was just wondering if you would also want to include how to setup projector for a mac computer using the adaptor and the mirror imaging? I can't wait to see this video.
ReplyDeleteHey Adam,
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. I love how you're going to incorporate the intimidating music with shot of the SmartBoard. Just make sure that when you talk about the Fn+F7 for the presentation mode that you tell people to be patient and wait. That's why it didn't always work for me. Sounds silly, but now that I know to wait a couple of seconds for it to transfer I never have a problem.
Also, I don't want to stray away from your subject of "setting up the SmartBoard", but maybe at the end of the video you could write something like "now that you know how to set it up, check out some SmartBoard lessons at..." Just a little something to get them started? Just a thought. I'm sure yours will come out awesome!
Hi Adam,
ReplyDeleteI like the concept of your video - you can never get too basic when teaching others how to use technology - this coming from someone who literally had to teach her parents how to turn the computer on! haha So I am sure judging by your first video that this one will be just as good if not better - love the humor by the way, I am a big fan a teaching/joking. Looking forward to viewing your video.
I love it Adam. I know a lot of teachers in my building who would love to have something like this to refer to. I'm trying to think of something I could offer to help you improve your idea but it sounds great! I'm no help...sorry!!
ReplyDeleteAdam,
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say, except, what a GREAT IDEA! I will be first in line to watch this informative video...of course, I need to have the SmartBoard first! :o) Seriously, this is a great reference tool for any teacher who may be intimidated by the Smartboard (LOVE the music idea). I do agree with Kristina and Geri about going through the basics. You know me, I am a big fan of "baby-steps" and a bit of hand-holding. I can't wait to see it!
Adam - Great. This is so specific that I think it will be very helpful in your creation of the video. I love that you have a sense of humor in your video...it is something that is lacking in many other videos that I have viewed. Looking at this outline I can imagine it exactly, and I think it will be a great success!
ReplyDeleteI think your outline is very detailed. I think you have set yourself a path to make a great presentation.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds great! I am looking forward to seeing it. It doesn't seem to be missing anything. Being that I am new at all of this, it is refreshing when I find a video that offers a clear and detailed explaination, being sure not to assume that the viewer knows anything about the topic. I love the idea of intimidating music! It appears that this video will be quite humorous :)
